Vans is set to release the highly anticipated collaboration with prolific Japanese contemporary artist, Takashi Murakami for the Vault by Vans collection. Murakami is world renowned for his vibrant paintings and sculptures in addition to fashion, filmmaking, and animation. The artist coined the term ‘superflat’ to describe his work which continually blurs the line between high and low art.
Murakami has taken on the Vans Classic Slip-On, a focused selection of apparel, and a few skateboard decks as his canvas for the Vault by Vans collection. Two of his most recognizable motifs, the smiling flower and skull patterns, are the key motifs leveraged throughout the limited-edition pieces. For the footwear piece of the collection specifically, there will be six adult-unisex and a trio of toddler-sized offerings.
The collection rounds out with a selection of three t-shirt designs and skateboard decks. Each of the boards incorporate the same graphics as the apparel with the exception of the wood-finished edition that features an appearance by Murakami’s beloved dog, Pom, which he has been known to periodically weaves into his work.
The Vault by Vans x Takashi Murakami Collection will be available at select stores on June 27th.
