Despite a resurgence in vinyl sales, the iconic Technics SL-1200 turntable was discontinued and the company was sold off back in 2010. Five years later, new Technics parent company, Panasonic, has announced that it has reinvented the SL-1200 and plans to relaunch the turntable line next year. A prototype was unveiled at Panasonic’s annual IFA press conference in Berlin last week and as you will see, design-wise, it’s quite a reinterpretation.
To be clear, this is just a prototype. The focus of the announcement was that they’d developed the new and improved direct drive motor that would lead to optimized sound production due to reduced vibration and speed fluctuations. Looks like we will get a new version of the SP-10 turntable as well. Look for more news on the official launch in the fall.
