Jess & Crabbe - Demolition Tape 5
February 19th, 2009
Jess & Crabbe….hard to put into words how influential they were on us. Their sound reached beyond the frontiers of house music. Inspired by hip-hop, reggae, Chicago house, with a punk attitude. A little background for those who may not be familiar:
Jess experimented in punk, reggae sound systems and raves before diving into Chicago house while Crabbe was into rap, hip hop, and jungle. They formed “Hometown”, a DJ collective that rocked clubs such as the infamous Rex Club in Paris. Shortly after Crabbe worked with Daft Punk on ‘Oh Yeah’ off of the historic “Homework” album, they bought some machines and started to produce tracks. After releasing ten epic 12’’s together, they unfortunately went their separate ways.
Amongst the the original material on the legendary Fiat Lux Recordings label and remixes Jess & Crabbe blessed us with between 1999 and 2001 they put together a series of four mixtapes (yes, actual tapes…and we have all of them) called the “Demolition Tapes.” Our friends at Flou Kids gave us a heads up that they not only did a DJ date together in January but are reviving the mixtape series and we couldn’t be happier. Christmas has come early!

Appears to have been a successful scam pulled off in Shanghai, China surrounding a “secret” Daft Punk concert that was schedule for February 13th. 3800 people apparently bought tickets over the course of a couple of days at 500 RMB a pop ($70-80). A Facebook group has popped up recently dedicated to the issue. The photographs below were taken by surveillance camera at the ticket office the scammers rented.

Daft Punk have issued an official response:
“DENIAL. Daft Punk is not playing in Shangri. The band are not touring this year, and at no point were they approached for this show, and at no point was there ever a possibility that they would do such a show.
The band and those around them were made aware of the scam in the last day or so, and are very upset that there are crooks out there trying to rip off the bands loyal fans.
All Daft Punk shows are announced on the bands official MySpace site, and we urge fans to check the site before purchasing tickets for shows.
The bands representatives are currently looking into what future action can be taken regarding the fraudsters responsible for the current scam. Daft Punk are looking forward to visiting and performing in China as part of their next world tour, in 2010 or 2011.”
So while we are saddened by this event we are excited that they are in the studio working on material and planning on hitting the road again to promote it. For our fellow Daft Punk fans and to the folks who were duped by this scam we give you a couple of recordings to keep us going.
